Earlier this week, John Mayer provided USTREAM viewers with a tour of the backstage area of the Jones Beach Amphitheater in New York. He also provides a glimpse of the upcoming John Mayer “Black Strat,” which is a replica of the well-worn black strat that he regularly plays. Interestingly, the regular production model will not be relic’d, while the Custom Shop version will be identical to the one he plays.

Just a bit of Trivia … was working the the wonderful “Village Recorder” in West Los Angeles a few years back. John Meyer has his own space there and also does a lot of recording in the studios below. I passed through Studio A one afternoon. His crew was setting up John’s equipment for guitar overdubs. If memory serves me, there were in excess of 70 Fender Stratocasters in this giant case made for him. One of the roadies remarked that each one has it’s own special sound, which of course is true but WOW! … must be nice. I admit that Meyer is a wonderful musicians and after speaking to him a few days later I have to say he is a nice guy as well.

My two cents on Mayer–I have a good friend who used to be his ass’t tour manager (unfortunately, this good friend is now THE tour manager for Reba, much to my chagrine). She always hooked us up with great tickets for his shows, etc. She would also tell us story after story about how dedicated Mayer is to his trade–he would literally play a show every night of every year if his band would let him. He literally wants to do nothing but write and play. I’m a huge fan, of course, but I think this trait shows even to the casual observer.
