Dylan Higginbotham, who along with his wife Leah creates videos for inthegarage.tv, recently e-mailed me in response to my post about cigar-box guitar builder Dr. Kirk Withrow. Higginbotham let me know that one of their recent videos featured Sean Kochel, who creates guitars using antique woods and cigar boxes. Kochel’s guitars are unique in that he uses reclaimed wood from old barns and other antique buildings, and he also incorporates other antique touches, such as an antique key as a bridge or old bullet heads as fret markers. These touches create a cigar-box style guitar unlike any others I’ve seen before.

Here’s a video of Moreland & Arbuckle, which was the act I saw with Eric Johnson this summer in Cleveland. The lead guitarist played a cigar box guitar.

Hey Ed, I’m a fan of Moreland & Arbuckle after picking up an album of theirs on a lark. Thanks for the video!

As far as guitars go, this is the most interesting thing I’ve seen in a while. I wonder where I can find that “build a guitar in a day” article he mentioned?

Thanks for sharing this. A very inspirational and creative concept. We need more of this type of handcrafting and art instilled in today’s world.

I agree, Chris. I’m glad to see people like Sean doing work like this.
