To kick off the release of his new album Battle Studies, John Mayer played a concert at the Beacon Theatre in NYC and the concert was broadcast by Fuse. Mayer played a number of guitars throughout the show, including of course a collection of Strats and his signature Martin acoustic. He also played a Telecaster, which isn’t too much of a surprise as he’d posted videos of himself playing a Telecaster during the recording of the album. However, what was surprising was him playing an SG at the end of the show on “Friends, Lovers, or Nothing”. He got a great tone out of it through his Two Rock amps.
Below is a video of Mayer playing the song with his SG:
Charlie says
What is this SG?
I love the bridge on it…
Josh says
Mayer tone through an SG? I’ve been trying to do this for ages. At least now I know it’s possible
Josh says
The Sg he’s playing is a ’61 reissue. It’s got the added ’61 vibrola tailpiece. It’s possible that the guitar is originally from 1961, but i doubt it.
Jack says
it is in fact a 1961 “Les Paul” SG. They do not make reproductions of that specific virbato tailpiece, too unstable tuning wise. Beautiful guitar. Derek Trucks has one as well
Josh says
Thanks for the information, Jack.
John says
It’s not a reissue. It’s original. Money for a 30,000 dollar guitar isn’t an issue for John Mayer haha. Here is a history lesson: it’s a ’61 Les Paul not SG. In 1961, Gibson released the first SG body shape but it was classified as a Les Paul. The SG was not called the SG until the next year. So John is playing an original 1961 Gibson Les Paul.
