Anthony Stauffer has posted an interesting article about how he has arrived at playing music for a hobby instead of as a career. After trying to become a rock star for over 10 years, he had to be honest with himself:
This simple truth created a situation where I resented having to do the very things that were necessary to put me in a position to do what I though I loved. I thought I wanted to travel the world playing music on stages in front of thousands of people. But I hated packing up all my gear to go play a show for 50 people. And even more, I hated packing up all my stuff at odd hours of the morning, and taking it back home. I simply wanted to get on stage and play, and that’s it.
It’s easy to romanticize what it must be like to be a rock star, but, as Anthony points out, making it as a musician requires much more than playing music.

Josh – Wow. Thanks for posting this. I have spent the last 2 hours digesting everything on the SteviesSnacks.com site. This guy is an amazing teacher – and I am totally impressed with his ability to communicate via video. It is equally impressive how his approach is genuine – he does not come across as a guy that just want to sell his stuff… he really wants to communicate his heart and soul. Great post, this really made me think alot. I have decided to try my best at making music for a living. I am not going to walk away from the day job right away, but just steadily chip away at the music thing. I play more solo acoustic guitar and traditional celtic music, so i dont have any dreams of being a rockstar as its a small niche. But i think if i can write music for various mediums, put out cds, gig and teach at camps it might doable. I realized if i did not try i would regret it later.

That is so true! When I first got into a band and tried to become famous I thought that if the music was good enough that would make us famous. Now I see how wrong I was, it’s so much harder than that

Yeah, Kyle, it definitely takes much more than good music.

I think the best hobby is music. You can listen to the instrumental part of it, listen to the lyrics, and even play it yourself. Whenever I’m sad, music pampers me. Whenever I’m happy, music let my body move and dance. It always interacts my life. I really love listening music and consider it as my best hobby ever.
